NCShakes Hosts Recertification Workshop for Teachers

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Educators are invited to register for NCShakes’ Hands On Shakespeare workshop, taking place on Saturday, March 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Spirit Center, 807 W. Ward Ave., High Point.

Hands On Shakespeare workshops are designed to give teachers the tools they need to get students of Shakespeare on their feet. Sherri Raeford, NCShakes Outreach and Education Director, explains further, “Shakespeare’s beautiful language places his works in the literary canon; however, Shakespeare wrote his plays to be performed. Hands On Shakespeare workshops help educators and interested adults explore the work of Shakespeare through an actor’s viewpoint while addressing the very real challenge of relating the activities to Common Core State Standards and North Carolina Essential Standards required for classroom teaching.”

In a relaxed, collaborative environment, educators will become more comfortable with Shakespeare as performance. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of Shakespeare’s language and learn practical ideas to reach every student in the classroom. The workshop qualifies for 1.0 CEU credit.

For the March 8 workshop, Raeford will lead participants in active, fun and shared activities developed through her involvement with Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, “Shakespeare Lives!” and her own classroom experience. Dr. Lynne Murray of High Point University will reinforce the active exploration of the text with links to relevant curricular standards, modern culture and the demands of the 21st century classroom.

Registration includes all materials, snacks, lunch, dinner, attendance of a 6:30 p.m. Shakespeare To Go performance of “Hamlet,” including a post-performance discussion with the NCShakes actors.

All participants will receive one CEU credit (10 contact hours). The cost of the workshop is $99. For further information see www.ncshakes.org/handsonshakespeare.cfm .
