NCShakes Presents a Trio of Shakespeare Slams Aug. 25, Sept. 1 & 8
In preparation for its upcoming production of Romeo and Juliet at The High Point Theatre Sept. 9-30, the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival is offering all ages a chance to take a crack at the Bard with a series of open Shakespeare Slams scheduled throughout the Triad. All three events are free.
Individuals and small groups may present sonnets or short scenes from Shakespeare’s plays; time limit: five minutes. No registration is required. Simple costumes and hand props are permitted. Participants will receive a free gift.
Shakespeare Slams will take place:
Saturday, Aug.25 at 10:30 a.m. – DeBeen Espresso (709 W. Lexington Ave., High Point)
Saturday, Sept. 1 at 10:30 a.m. – Community Arts Café (411 West Fourth Street, Winston-Salem)
Saturday, Sept. 8 at 4 p.m. – Tate Street Coffee House (334, S. Tate Street, Greensboro)
Pedro Silva, NCShakes artistic and managing director, says the slams are “an excuse to have good-natured fun presenting The Bard ‘as you will’ in front of family, friends and total strangers. Of course, people are welcome to watch without performing themselves.”
Silva got the idea for the slam from talking to the many people he meets though his work at the festival. “I’m struck by how many people feel both challenged and fascinated by Shakespeare,” he says. “Many have a story to tell – complete with the name of their high school teacher – about their first encounter with his plays, but few have the opportunity to perform or recite Shakespeare publicly. This is their chance.”
Slam performers can prepare a piece in advance, or can choose from a selection of Shakespeare writings available on-site. For more information, contact NCShakes at 336-841-2273.
NCShakes’ 35th MainStage production of Romeo and Juliet takes place Sept. 9-30 at the High Point Theatre, with ticket prices ranging from $10-$30; tickets are available at www.highpointtheatre.com. The festival’s 35th season continues with A Christmas Carol on Dec. 6-23 and the statewide Shakespeare To Go touring program in Spring 2013.
